Lesson 2: Setting up your Domain and Email
This lesson will help ensure your domain and email are set up for your website. If you already have a domain with another host, head straight to "Connecting a Third Party Domain".
In this lesson we will:
1. Choose your Squarespace plan
2. Register, connect or transfer your domain
3. Set up your email
OPTIONAL: Connecting a third party domain
Before we begin: Though not explicitly titled, this is the menu we refer to as “Home”
Step 1: Choose your squarespace plan
Go to Home > Settings > Billing & Account > Billing
If you don’t yet have a domain and want to buy one through Squarespace (yes they host domains!) then you need to choose your membership plan first.
We recommend upgrading your account by purchasing an annual plan because your domain is FREE for the first year with this option!
Click on the "UPGRADE" button to choose your plan. For most uses, a personal or business plan will suffice. For commerce plans (with extra features) click on the Commerce tab to see pricing options.
TIP: All plans come with the option of adding on a shop/being able to sell products and services; the lower plans just don't have some of the Commerce features. So if in doubt, start on a lower plan and you can always upgrade it later and pay the difference.
Step 2: Register, connect or transfer your domain
Settings > Domains > Get A Domain
Once you’ve purchased your annual plan, you can search for your custom domain of choice by going to Website > Domains > Get A Domain. Find a domain by using the search function and add the one you’d like to your cart and proceed to checkout. You’ll need to enter some personal information to register your domain, and then you’ll be able to complete this without paying!
Step 3: Set up your email
Settings > Email & G Suite
Your annual plan also includes 1 year of GSuite for free! Head to the email section of your site to set up your custom email account. You can add new users for an additional $5 per month, and have different names or user handles for each one.
OPTIONAL: Connecting a Third Party Domain
If you already have a domain through another host (GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc.), you have two options to connect a third party domain:
Option 1: simply connect it to your website or
Option 2: you can transfer your domain to be hosted through Squarespace.
TIP: Transferring a domain allows you to manage the domain and website through Squarespace. This allows you to access all DNS settings from the back end and will also allow Squarespace to help you with any issues should any arise. Connecting a domain means hosting your site with a third party. This may limit the capabilities with which Squarespace can help you with any issues you may have. We recommend transferring your domain over connecting it but we will go over both.
OPTION 1: Connecting a domain
Settings > Domains > Use A Domain I Own
To connect the domain to your site click "Use A Domain I Own" and type in the domain name. (eg: mydomain.com)
The search function will find your domain and give you the option of either connecting the domain or transferring. Click to connect.
Once you’ve opted for the connect option, a pop-up will appear allowing you to login to your domain host and ask permission to connect the domain. Follow the prompted steps, and voila! your domain will be connected.
OPTION 2: Transferring a domain
Settings > Domains > Use A Domain I Own
If you already have a domain through another host (GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc.) and you want to transfer it to Squarespace, enter the domain name into the search bar under “Domain Name” and follow the steps provided by Squarespace.
This option requires a little extra work, but Squarespace will guide you through it step by step.
Congrats! Your account is all set up! No backing out now. Together, we’re gonna make a website that you’ll be proud to showcase! Head over to Lesson 3 as we get your “Coming Soon” page up and running.
