Meet Our Assembly of Oh So Fine Talent: Jaime Bell
We’ve just wrapped up our Assembly event - the unconventional convention designed for and facilitated almost entirely by small businesses - and we want to highlight each and every one of our amazing vendors.
Partly because we’re sure the day was a bit of a whirlwind and with lots of new names and faces around, people probably need a bit of a refresh. But also for those who couldn’t come and are still looking for a network of fine individuals that can help them with their small business needs.
So, without further ado, we bring you a brief interview with Jaime Bell of Awe Legal, someone who understands that there isn’t just one kind of entrepreneur, and who caters specifically to entrepreneurs, freelancers, and creatives!
SO, WHO ARE YOU?
I'm Jaime Bell, the BC business lawyer for AWE Legal. AWE Legal is a two-woman law firm serving Ontario and British Columbia.
AND WHAT IS IT YOU DO AGAIN?
I provide legal advice and support to businesses and entrepreneurs
HOW EXACTLY DO YOU HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER?
Dealing with the un-sexy side (aka legal side) of business is definitely not at the top of most entrepreneurs' 'to-do' list. I help business owners navigate the legal side, making sure they have the right legal structure and contracts in place to support their business now, and where they want to grow.
WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS?
Think and plan like you're going to be a big deal and treat your business like a business! My approach is to meet my clients where they are at in their business and simplify the legal side of things as much as possible. I see law as a tool that empowers my clients to grow their businesses, get paid for their services (!) and set a professional and on-brand tone from the start.
HOW WOULD YOUR CLIENTS DESCRIBE YOU?
Practical, supportive, and energetic. I also hope they think I make the law-part as fun as possible!
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START DOING WHAT YOU DO?
It took me a few years practicing law to really find my stride. When I started working more and more with entrepreneurs, I found their passion, creativity and enthusiasm for their business totally energizing. When I met Darielle, the founder of AWE Legal, she had carved out this amazing niche for athletes, wellness professionals and entrepreneurs, and I instantly wanted to be part of that.
WHAT MADE YOU GO OUT ON YOUR OWN?
I joined Darielle at AWE Legal because I wanted to work with kickass clients who are forging their own paths, and I love being part of their journey. There is a huge, under-served community of entrepreneurs building amazing, profitable businesses that are being ignored by traditional law firms, and AWE Legal stepped in.
I also wanted to practice law on my own terms (no stuffy suits, legalese or expensive office overhead) and ultimately serve clients that I'd want to sit down with at the end of the day and have a glass of wine with, or have a meeting on a hike rather than a stuffy boardroom. The practice I'm building out here on the West Coast is exactly that.
