LAUNCH Web Workshop: September 2017 Recap
Just over a week ago we hosted our second LAUNCH website workshop - an intense full day course in building your website in Squarespace. We were so proud and lucky to be able to host it again and help 3 small business owners create their own website - so much so that we're going to show them off a little bit!
9am: Just like last time, we asked our participants to arrive bright and early. We like to kick things off with some breakfast and a chance to meet each other. Basically we hang out for a while and get to know each other!
9.30: Kicking off the day officially, we jumped into an outline of the day, explaining what would be happening throughout the day, and introducing them to Alexa, who would be taking their portraits in the afternoon.
10am: In order to really give the most value we could, we started the morning session with a 90 minute Squarespace and web design lesson. We covered the 5 Key Elements of a homepage, how to use marketing strategies on your website, and of course, the in's and out's of Squarespace.
When it comes to Squarespace we like to have a high-level look at how the platform functions, and the little inside tricks we've learnt through lots of testing, trials, and research.
From there we build the first page together, in a step-by-step tutorial that shows our participants how they can apply the design rules we've just taught them, and work within a strong grid on their site. Not even midday and we're one page down!
11.30 am: Snack time! The Good Stuff were kind enough to keep us fuelled, and provided us with a selection of their smoothie flavours. Thanks guys!
12 pm: With a little extra fuel in us, we then have the rest of the day as an open form work session. Each person rotates between having their headshot taken, or working with either Daphne or myself one-on-one whilst we built out their remaining pages; the contact page, home page, and one other of their choice.
We like to start with the contact page, as it's relatively low key. Our pre-workshop questionnaire tells us what each person would like on their contact page (i.e do they want their phone number, or a visible email address? Do they want a photo?) and with that we give them a wireframe to be working from. Having already built their about page, the contact page is the perfect chance for them to test out their new skills!
What we learnt from our previous workshop, was that the free flowing work session was by far everyone's favourite. What's really key is having time for them to work and us being right there when they need us. We grabbed some lunch (from Nuba!) and carried on working throughout the afternoon.
3 pm: A quick break to check out everyone's head shots and review the progress of the sites. Everyone KILLED IT with their head shots and looked amazing! Plus, for some websites, you need very specific imagery. Amalia, for instance, needed a banner on her homepage that had a lot of empty space for text to be overlaid. With the whole team present we could show Alexa the space where the photo needed to be, and example of how it would look, and then they could get to work! It worked out great as you can see below 👇🏼
4 pm: By the end of the afternoon the focus is completing the key pieces and structure of the site. There are always going to be more questions and things to touch up, but getting the structure in place means the participants can go home all excited and finish those bits up alone. The homepage in particular is normally content heavy, so is the focus of a lot of our time.
5 pm: Time to celebrate! We popped open the champagne whilst we were working and had a toast to all of their hard work. And just like, the day was done, and 3 happy ladies went home with brand new websites! 🍾
Thanks again to all our contributors, listed below, as well as the participants themselves! Take a look at each of their sites, and let us know what you think!
